Incremental marketing steps

As the Tour de France wraps up, discussions will now turn towards next year and who has the best chance of winning. As the tour began to climb into the Alps this year everyone was wondering who will be strong enough to finish on top. The mountains get steeper, the ride gets harder, and most are just trying to hold on until the next flat stage. As the yellow jersey contenders fought for the top spot and gain control of the race what was everyone else doing? Most were trying to hang on to the back of the peloton trying not to drop so far behind that they get kicked out of the race all together.

Where does your business ride during the tough stages? Do you fight for the yellow jersey and try and take control of your corner of the market, or, are you sitting in the peloton just trying to survive the tough times? While most are sitting in the peloton, others are making key moves to increase their overall time in the race in small but important increments.

Compelling email ROI

One of our clients that utilizes many of our internet marketing programs was not excited about getting an email marketing program in place. Their reasoning was the fact they had tried it several times in the past, with no discernable results. Because we had implemented Google Analytics so that we could track such a campaign, we offered to test one campaign, track the results, and measure ROI. The first send showed a decent response, but we decided to resend to those that hadn’t opened the first message and the net result was an astonishing $28,000 in revenue from a $1000 email campaign. Not bad.

Email marketing is up 83% in spending for 2009. Many are sending out emails taking advantage of its effectiveness. With all the additional emails being sent out it is now even more important to give your emails the proper attention by sticking to the best practices so yours stand out from the riff raff.

  • Having email authentication setup – increases deliverability, makes sure they get your email.
  • Using HTML inline styling – only way to guarantee your email displays properly in all email browsers…and testing in all email browsers as well.
  • Creating a template that not only looks great with the images on but when turned off as well. Most browsers automatically display emails with images turned off: make sure message can be viewed and understandable with no images on.
  • Clear, simple subject line.
  • Tracking – either through Google Analytics, unique 800 numbers, etc.

Following these best practices is a necessity in starting off an effective campaign but the big factor is providing relevant content.

Dr. Flint McGlaughlin, Director of MarketingExperiments says the main reason most people are turned off by an email campaign is not by how often they receive it but by the lack of relevant content. Right off the bat the viewer needs to understand what they are looking at, what their options are and why they should do it. If the consumer can’t answer these questions right away then the email needs to be re-evaluated.

The client example we spoke of above was effective because the offer was not only a great deal but because the viewer instantly understood what the offer was, when they could receive it and how to book it within seconds of opening the email. In this case, they also included a unique 800 to call so they were able to track how much profit the email pulled in.

Strange Ad Copy for Google Adwords

Today I came across an absolutely strange Adwords ad in my Gmail interface. I am absolutely clueless why would any advertiser put up an ad like that and even if they do how can the Adwords editorial team approve such an ad copy. On top of my Gmail inbox the Adwords ad displayed as

Text ad - www.url.com - Desc1 Desc2

Just to satisfy my curiosity I clicked on the ad to find that it leads to a page that apparently doesn't exist, however, I was even more surprised by the fact that the landing page URL is completely tagged to keep a tab on the performance of the campaign, which indicates that the person who has set up the campaign definitely knows a bit or two about Adwords and PPC

Landing Page:
http://www.test.0000000184.com/path?keywords=keyword&creative=3849139695&adGroup=7711

While the ad copy mostly complies to the Google Editorial policy except for the fact that the landing page URL isn't working ( and that should get the ad disabled ) it is rather strange for any company to put up an ad like that.

There are just two possibilities that clicks my mind on this..

a) The ad is run by Google themselves to test any internal feature or gather any specific user behavior data ( by passing the editorial policy is not an issue for them)

b)Any major agency is running these ads for the purpose of finding out any user behavior data or calculating some other competitive matrix like minimum cpc, ctr or minimum impressions on specific keywords etc. However, in this case I am not sure how they have been able to bypass the Adwords editorial policy.

Summary Of Matt Cutts New SEO Video In Relevance To Google

Just finished watching Matt Cutts new SEO video. It offers some great tips in terms of what Google deems important. If you didn't already know, Matt is an employee of Google.

The following list is in order of importance to Google:

1. Having a website that the search engine spider can crawl. Simple html pages work best (Example: http://seo-seotips.blogspot.com/)

2. Create a sitemap page for your website and submit your sitemap to Google to crawl at the following URL: http://www.auditmypc.com/free-sitemap-generator.asp

3. Have good content that other sites will want to link to. Syndicating your content is a good idea. This makes it easier for other sites to place your content on their site with a link back to your site.

4. Having a website that offers something unique or something about your site that sets you apart. Perhaps something viral, like a free ebook, tutorials, useful tools, etc.

Other information revealed by Matt Cutts:

The website description used in Google's organic listings are query dependent. Google will either use the DMOZ directory listing (if one exists and Google deems more relevant to search query) or it will use the website's description meta tag.

(SEO) terms

Page title
See "title tag"

Pagejacking
Stealing high-ranking web page content from another site and placing it on your site in the hopes of increasing your own site's search engine rankings. Pagejacking is yet another shady way of gaming the search engines and, as such, its use should be strongly discouraged.

PageRank (PR)
Google uses a weighted form of link popularity called PageRank™. Not all links are created equal. Google differentiates a link from an important site (such as CNN.com) as being better than a link from Jim-Bob's personal home page. The Google Toolbar (which is a free download from http://toolbar.google.com) has a PageRank meter built into it, to see which web pages are considered important by Google and which aren't. PageRank scoring ranges from 0 to 10, 10 being the best. PageRank scores get exponentially harder to achieve the closer to 10 they are. For example, increasing your own homepage's PageRank from a 2 to 3 is easy with not a lot of additional links, jumping from a 7 to an 8 is very difficult to achieve. The higher the PageRank of the page that's linking to you, the more your site's PageRank will benefit. The better your PageRank, the better you'll do in Google, all else being equal.

Pageviews
see "Impression"

Paid inclusion
paying a search engine to have your web pages included in that search engine's index.

Paid placement
paying a search engine to have your listing show up prominently. These listings are usually denoted as "sponsored listings."

Pay-for-performance
a pricing model based on delivering sales or something else that can be directly attributed to the bottom line. Contrast this with traditional banner advertising which is based on impressions, a chunk of which come from people you have no desire or ability to do business with.

Pay-per-click (PPC)
a pay-for-performance pricing model where advertising (such as banners or paid search engine listings) is priced based on number of clickthroughs rather than impressions or other criteria. Overture is an example of a search engine which charges advertisers on a pay-per-click basis.

Pay-per-post (PPP)
A website designed to help content creators such as bloggers find advertisers willing to sponsor specific content.

PDF
Adobe's Portable Document Format, a file format that renders the page exactly as intended regardless of the computer used. Typically used for creating documents that will be printed. PDF is used instead of HTML when the content creator wants absolute control over the display of the document. In contrast, the display of an HTML document depends on the computer and web browser software used.

PHP
an "open source" programming language for building dynamic web sites. PHP can be used to write server-side programs that access databases. PHP is the most popular web programming language - more popular than Microsoft's ASP (Active Server Pages), JSP (Java Server Pages), and Macromedia's Cold Fusion. PHP is especially well-suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. PHP is secure, easy to learn, efficient, fast to code and fast to deploy. PHP is being used by over nine million web sites (over 24% of the sites on the Internet), due largely to benefits such as quicker response time, improved security, and transparency to the end user.

Phrase Match
Phrase Match is a form of keyword matching where an ad will be displayed if the user's search query includes the exact phrase, even if their query contains additional words.

For example if the terms "running shoes" are associated with an ad and the user searches upon the term "blue running shoes", the ad will be displayed.

However, the ad will not be displayed if the search query is "shoes for running".

Pop-under
A pop-up that appears underneath the currently active web browser window. An annoying, if not shady, tactic used by some web advertisers.

Pop-up
A web page that displays within a new, typically smaller, web browser window, rather than the currently active browser window. Search engine spiders don't typically follow pop-up (or pop-under) links. Pop-ups are often times used for promotions, ads, email newsletter invitations, survey invitations, and the like.

Portal
A site that functions as a point of access to information on the web. Portals are either authoritative hubs for a given subject or popular content driven sites.

Pull-down list
On a web form, where the user chooses from a list of items. For example, if you are asked to identify which country you are from, this will typically be done using a pull-down list. A pull-down list is usually displayed with the first item within a box and a down arrow immediately to the right. Clicking on the down arrow will display the full list to choose from. Search engine spiders can't fill out forms or pull down on lists, so content that is only accessible through pull-down lists will not be indexed and will be part of the "Invisible Web."

search engine optimization (SEO) terms

Absolute Link

The above is an example of an Absolute Link.

It specifies a

- transfer protocol
- domain name
- and often a file name

“Absolute Link verses Relative Link”.

Accessibility
Accessibility is the practice of making websites usable by disabled people - especially blind people.

Because search engines are essentially blind (ie they can't see pictures or use Flash) accessible websites tend to have better search engine rankings than inaccessible websites.
AdSense
Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their website's content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you'll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages.

It's also a way for website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

AdWords
Google's CPC (Cost Per Click) based text advertising. AdWords takes clickthrough rate into consideration in addition to advertiser?s bid to determine the ad?s relative position within the paid search results. Google applies such a weighting factor in order to feature those paid search results that more popular and thus presumably more relevant and useful. Google has also started taking into account the quality of the landing page and applying a quality score to the landing pages.

Agent Name
This is the name of the Crawler/spider that is currently visiting a page. Spider is a robot sent out by search engines to catalogue websites on the internet. When a spider indexes a particular website, this is known as 'being spidered'.
AJAX
Asynchronous JavaScript And XML

Allows you to create a more user-friendly web application by working behind the scenes (inside a web browser) by making web pages feel more responsive.

In short, it allows JavaScript scripts to send data requests and receive responses without having to reload the entire page.

Algorithm
An algorithm is an operational programming rule that determine how a search engine indexes content and displays the results to its users.

AllTheWeb
“AllTheWeb” is a search engine owned by Yahoo and using its database.

Alt Attribute
The ALT attribute is designed to be an alternative text description (provide a text equivalent) for images.

Benefits

Alt tags
Alt tags alternate text associated with a web page graphic that gets displayed when the Internet user hovers the mouse over the graphic. Alt tags should convey what the graphic is for or about and contain good relevant keywords. Alt tags also make web pages more accessible to the disabled. For example, a vision-impaired user may have a web browser that reads aloud the text and alt tags on a page. (For those familiar with HTML, "alt" isn't actually a tag by itself but an attribute to the "img" tag.). Note that the value of Alt tags for SEO have been discounted over time by the search engines to the point that now it is of minimal value.

Anchor text
Anchor text is the actual text part of a link (usually underlined). Used by search engines as an important ranking factor. Google pays particular attention to the text used in a hyperlink and associates the keywords contained in the anchor text to the page being linked to. Also see "Google bombing."
Animated Ad
An ad with movement, often an interactive Java applet or Shockwave or GIF89a file. [edit]
announce site to search engines
"Announce" a website to the engines by adding a link to it from another site; that is, one that's already indexed (by the search engines).

Beware! Search engine submission services which promise higher visibility in the SERPS are total a rip-off.
Announcing
See Submitting Definition
API
Abbreviation for Application Program Interface. An API is a set of routines, protocols and tools for building software applications; it determines how a service is invoked through the application.
ASP
An acronym for Active Server Pages, a Microsoft-invented, proprietary programming language for building dynamic web sites. ASP is also an acronym for Application Service Provider, a hosted service available via the Internet.
Automated Submitting
Automated Submitting is using automated software such as WebPosition Gold or an Application Service Provider (ASP) such as Microsoft b-central's Submit-It service to submit your web pages to the search engines.

This tactic is frowned upon by the search engines. Indeed, some search engines such as AltaVista have completely automated submissions by requiring the user to re-key in a one-time use submission code that is displayed on the submission page as a graphic..

5 Most Common Link Building Mistakes

After getting to know that link popularity is the most important factor that search engines consider when deciding your Pagerank, almost everyone has taken to posting their back links all over the internet. However, gaining credible link popularity that increases your page rank is really not as easy as it sounds and most people who do not know much about how Pagerank works keep creating text links that are either useless, or even harmful for their webpage. In order to make link popularity work for you, it is important to avoid the most common link building mistakes.

  1. Creating Links On Unrelated Pages.
Search engines nowadays are smart enough to decipher whether your link is relevant to the users of the webpage that they are placed on or not. So if you are putting the text links of your webpages which are related to cooking on websites that deal with high end electronic goods, wrestling or real estate, you can be sure that these links will be trashed by the search engine, doing zilch for your Pagerank. So create links on sites that have related content. For example, if you have a cooking related website, placing links on home improvement, restaurant, recipe and kitchen equipment sites will be helpful.
  2. Creating Text Links That Proclaim,"Click Here".
Google search engine spiders use the text on your hyperlink to determine what your website is all about and this plays an important role in determining both your Pagerank as well as your search engine rankings. By putting hyperlinks that simply say " click here for more information" or "know more here", you are telling the search engines that your website is about clicking and knowing more and that is where you will be ranked high instead of getting high search engine rankings for your own domain. Make it a point to use relevant keywords in your text links.
  3. Creating Links On High Pagerank Pages That Already Have Hundreds Of Links.
Yes, it is true that the higher the PR of a page linking to you, the higher will be the value assigned to the link by the search engines and the greater will be your page rank. This is because the value or points that you get from a page that links back to you is determined by the formula — page rank of linking page / number of links on that page. But it is equally important to pay attention to the denominator of the formula, since a highly ranked page with lots of back links may end up giving you lower value than a page with lower rank but lesser links.
  4. Placing Links On Dynamic Pages.
Web pages that are generated dynamically take ages to get indexed, and in all probability, a text link on such a page will never help in increasing your page rank. Identify dynamic pages by URLs with special symbols in them (&,? etcetera) and save your time by not posting any text links to your site on such pages.
  5. Creating Links On Pages That SE Spiders Cannot Crawl On.
The whole point of building link popularity for increasing page rank is to make your site accessible to search engine spiders. However, search engine bots have not become smart enough to read pages generated by Flash or JavaScript. They are also unable to read text links placed within frames, so it is a complete waste of time creating back links on sites that are either Flash generated or framed, since these links would be totally ignored by search engine spiders.

AdSense Arbitrage is Dead?

It appears from a series of posts in the forum at WebmasterWorld indicates that Google could finally be cracking down on AdSense arbitrage. Some owners of AdSense accounts involved in arbitrage claim to have received emails from Google advising them that they have an unsuitable business model for AdSense and that their accounts will be disabled within a few weeks.

In essence AdSense arbitrage involves bidding for advertising on Google AdWords at very low "per click" prices, then directing that traffic to a site designed with the primary purpose of having the visitors click on similar advertisements but hopefully those a much higher bid price, sourced through Google's AdSense contextual advertising program.

It can be argued that the key to successful arbitrage is to not provide any substantial or quality content on the landing web page. This means that when a visitor comes they are more likely to want to leave immediately and click on one of the AdSense ads to make a quick exit.

Jennifer Slegg, who keeps a blog on contextual advertising at JenSense.com, sheds some light on the reason for this latest action. “From a business perspective, it does make perfect sense for Google to make this move, since so many Google AdWords advertisers refuse to advertise on the content network because there are so many “Made for AdSense” style sites as well as those doing arbitrage. So in the long run, it could mean more money for publishers if/as advertisers return to the content network.”

So just how widespread is arbitrage? We're not just talking about a few dollars here. I did a quick search on “AdSense arbitrage” yesterday (yes, at Google's very own search engine), and there at the top of the results is a product being promoted with the bold claim, “How I Use Google Adwords to Drive Traffic to My Adsense Sites Making Me $1,324.79 a Day on AutoPilot.” That's big dollars.

And over at WebmasterWorld this week, one forum member joined the discussion about the account closures with this comment, “Got the same email here. I just reached my 70k-month... That sucks.”

Jeremy Luebke of Marketingpilgrim.com had this to say, “This move is long overdue. The quality of the traffic coming from the Adwords content network has been terrible for years. There is not a single campaign any of my clients run on the content network where they are willing to bid more than the minimum bid. I'm sure by doing this, Google is hoping to restore confidence on both the advertisers end and the end user.”

This has all happened during May of 2007, so if you are reading this some time later you should catch any latest developments on the sites mentioned above.

What does this mean for web site owners and other advertisers? For webmasters using arbitrage or other dubious techniques this is a wake up call. In the long term quality will be rewarded and the rubbish will be thrown out.

I think these webmasters had to know this change had to come one day. As one forum user known as “potentialgeek” wrote, “For those who've been making money off arbit, if you're honest with yourselves, you must have known you built your business on sand, and guessed this time of hard rains would eventually come and wash it all away”.

For advertisers, Google's AdWords and AdSense programs just took a big leap forward in terms of quality. I am excited to see what difference this makes.

No doubt there are many webmasters looking for a new strategy right now. Let's hope they have learned a lesson and develop some new strategies based on good techniques and quality content.

Instead of using advertising for AdSense arbitrage perhaps these webmasters could use their advertising expertise to direct traffic to sites that contain real content that is of value to visitors. And how could they make money doing that? Well, the old-fashioned way of course. They could actually sell one of their own products or services. And if they really have nothing of their own of value to sell, perhaps they could recommend good quality affiliate products.

It's another day, another development, in the online business world. I think it's been a good day for all concerned. It's been a good day for the quality of Google's advertising network. And it's been a good day for the average Joe Citizen, who will not be taken to so many trashy web sites whenever they click on an advertisement.

5 Tips for Search Engine Optimization

SEO, or search engine optimization is the method of increasing your websites’ chance of getting tracked, listed and ranked by the search engine in the event a web search is conducted on your ‘targeted keywords’.

SEO helps your website to be understood and analyzed by the search engines and to gain a higher ranking by search providers.

Through the use of search engine optimization, you can increase the probability of your website being listed by the search engines whenever a relevant keyword matching your products or services are search for by a user.

Here are -5- winning tactics that can give your website a higher search engine rating:

#1: Tagging Correctly: Use the tag “{title}… {/title}” because this is where the search engine’s crawlers, bots and/or spiders can be pushed to generate higher search engine ranking for your website’s targeted keywords. You can include this tag to direct the search spiders to crawl your website futher.

#2: Meta tags: This is your front-line marketing den rather than search engine optimization. Here’s a look at the structure of a HTML ‘description’ meta tag:

Meta name= content description= “……”

The description that you write under this meta tag is the one that is used by the search engines while building their indexes. Keep these tags under 250 characters (including the tagged keywords). The meta tag content should also be relevant to the products, services or information that you offer on your website.

#3: The king of SEO is Content: Try to build the content of your web pages in accordance to the products or services that you offer. You must try to include the keywords that are most relevant to your business. You should also carefully decide on the keyword density because it has a large impact on the search engine results. Use the text formats like bold or italic as they also hold some degree of impact on the search engine index. Avoid the overuse of the keywords because they tend to make the content of your pages look more like an advertisement of keywords rather than meaningful content.

#4: Linking & Backlinks: This is another trick that can get your website a good amount of traffic. Generating link backs to your website from other relevant, high standing websites will earn you validity points with search providers. Be sure to get your URL links on various third party websites that are similar to yours and those who have been around and have a solid standing in your marketshare. Do not get into any sort of linking clubs or link farms as they can get you penalized and even get your website sandboxed or banned.

Research and find out similar niche websites that have a high ranking on the search engines and try to have your link posted on one of their webpages. This will also help you receive additional free traffic without any additional work on your part. You can even use Google’s Page Rank tool to find relevant standing websites and it is easy and useful in terms of SEO.

#5 Do Not Implement Illegitimate SEO Strategies: Keyword stuffing, email spam, and providing irrelevant content to attract additional traffic to your website, are all methods that search providers can track and will promptly penalize for their uses.

These -5- basic tips can get your website a higher ranking on the search engines’ indexes. So stick to them until newer and more fashionable methods are discovered.

301 Redirect - The SEO way to rename or move files or folders

In this article I will discuss page redirection techniques, what works and what to avoid.

What is page redirection and why would you want to use it?

Let's say you rename a page on your website, for whatever reason. Perhaps you decided to revamp your entire naming convention, perhaps you decided to restructure your site and need to move pages into different folders, or you just realized that you are missing valuable keywords.

Let's elaborate a bit on the keywords issue, since it is part of your search engine ranking success.

Let's say the page in question is about customized USB drives and you named it page1.htm. Then you read some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) articles and you found out that some search engines use words in the actual file name as search keywords. Next time you do a Google search, take a look at the results, most will have words in the actual file name (in the URL section) bolded, denoting a keyword match. Your USB drives page will definitely benefit if named something like custom_usb_drives.htm instead.

Now that you renamed your page, you just created a symphony of issues for yourself, for your users and for your position in search engine results.

Linking issues

You will have to point every link on your site to the new page name. If your site is small, it should not be a big deal, but if your site is large, you will inevitably make mistakes, mainly forgetting a link or two. This will result in visitors getting the dreaded "404 page not found" error when clicking on your links, robots (also know as crawlers or spiders) avoiding you, etc. Also, if you are heavily relying on visitors from search engines, then again, people will get a "404 page not found error".

Let's use the previous example, for a long time your page1.htm was indexed by major search engines. If someone types "custom usb drives" in a search engine box, your page shows up on the first search results screen. That is fantastic, only if someone clicks on the link, they will be pointed to page1.htm, not to custom_usb_drives.htm, because the first page is the one in the search engine's index. It will take time, sometimes months, before the search engines update their indexes with your new page name.

Lost Page Rank (PR) issues

Google developed a proprietary algorithm that assigns a Page Rank (PR) to every page on the web. PR is a number from 1 to 10 (10 being the ideal) and is intended to be a representation of how useful and popular a given page is. PR is influenced by many factors, one of the crucial ones being Link Popularity. Link Popularity is a representation of how many "quality" or "relevant" sites link to your page. Without getting into too much detail, it is increasingly difficult and time consuming to achieve a high PR for your pages, especially if you don't have a really unique website with exceptional and highly sought after content. If you are merely operating a commercial site, in a competitive market (such as selling custom branded USB drives, as in our example), then it takes a lot of time and hard work to build a good page PR.

When you rename a page and discard the old page, you also discard the PR of the page. Your renamed page will be seen as a totally new page, with 0 PR.

What is the solution?

I will start by enumerating some of the methods used by the non-initiated.

Not recommended solution 1: Duplicate content.

First thing that probably comes in you mind is: well, why can't you just duplicate the page and let nature take its course. In other words, you will have two identical pages, one named page1.htm and one custom_usb_drives.htm. This gives you time to update all links and the search engines will eventually index the new page.

This solution is not viable because search engines will penalize you quite badly, 'thinking' that you are trying to scam them by using the 'duplicate content' technique.

Not recommended solution 2: Custom error message.

You could create a custom error page. However, you will lose rankings on the next search engine update as the file will appear to be non-existent. As discussed above, it could be some time before the page with the new name will be indexed and will appear in people's searches. Also, your web site visitors will be frustrated by the fact that they now have to dig through your site to find the desired information.

Not recommended solution 3: An HTML Meta redirect.

You could implement a so called Meta refresh in a blank or customized page that has the name of the old page (in our example, page1.htm) that points to the new page. The redirect can be instant, or delayed by a predetermine amount of time. The delayed redirect has the advantage that you can place an extra message, such as "please be aware that the page you are looking for changed location..... etc., etc.... you will be redirected automatically to the new location"

In the past, this was probably the most used technique.

Without getting into the mechanics of the Meta redirect, which is basically a META tag statement you ad to your HEADER section, know that there are also Java Script techniques that achieve similar results.

What is bad about this is that this is a technique often used by spammers to trick search engines and it should be avoided, unless the page is in a section of your site that isn't indexed (also known as spidered or crawled). Search engine spammers create a page that is optimized for certain keywords and phrases - it usually has no real content. The page is then picked up by some search engines, but when a visitor clicks on the search engine entry, they are redirected to another site, often unrelated. Most search engines have filters to detect this. Using this form of search engine deception will see a site eventually banned or penalized by major players such as Google.

The recommended redirect strategy - 301 Redirect

A 301 redirect is the most efficient, visitor friendly, robot (spider, crawler) friendly and search engine friendly solution around for web sites that are hosted on servers running Apache. If you are not sure, check with your hosting provider.

A 301 redirect is just a set of commands you type into your .htaccess file.

When a visitor (whether human or robotic) requests a web page via any means, your web server checks for a .htaccess file. The .htaccess file contains specific instructions for certain requests, including security, redirection issues and how to handle certain errors.

The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently". After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new location or file name.

First of all, you'll need to find the .htaccess file in the root directory of where all your web pages are stored. If there is no .htaccess file there, you can create one with Notepad or a similar application. Make sure when you name the file that you remember to put the "." at the beginning of the file name. This file has no tail extension.

Some hosting providers offer redirect services through their "control panels", so you don't have to perform low level changes on the .htaccess file itself. Instead, they provide a user friendly interface for this. Check with your hosting provider to see what the optimal way to perform a 301 redirect is in your case. I will continue the article with the barebones solution.

If there is a .htaccess file already in existence with lines of code present, be very careful not to change any existing line unless you are familiar with the functions of the file.

Scroll down past all the existing code, leave a line space, then create a new line that follows this example:

redirect 301 /folder/page1.htm http://www.you.com/folder/custom_usb_drives.htm

It's as easy as that. Save the file, upload it back into your web and test it out by typing in the old address to the page you've changed. You should be instantly and seamlessly transported to the new location.

Notes: Be sure not to add "http://www" to the first part of the statement - just put the path from the top level of your site to the page. Also ensure that you leave a single space between these elements:

redirect 301 (the instruction that the page has moved)

/folder/page1.htm (the original folder path and file name)

http://www.you.com/folder/custom_usb_drives.htm (new path and file name)

The same format applies not only to renamed files, but also to files moved to a different location.

The 301 redirect is the safest way to preserve your rankings. On the next indexing (crawling, spidering), the search engine robot will obey the rule indicated in your .htaccess file and index the new page name every time a link or its internal database tries to access the old page. In the next update (again, this could take months), the old file name and path will be dropped and replaced with the new one. Sometimes you may see alternating old/new file names during the transition period, along with some possible fluctuations in rankings as things settle. Don't panic, this is normal.

What if your site is hosted on a Microsoft IIS server instead?

If you have access to the server, do this: In internet services manager, right click on the file or folder you wish to redirect. Select the radio titled "a redirection to a URL". Enter the redirection page, check "The exact url entered above" and the "A permanent redirection for this resource". Click "Apply".

If you do not have access to the server, ask your host to point you into the right direction.

In conclusion, the best and the most transparent way (to both human and robotic users) to rename and move files on your web site, while preserving your search engine ranks is the 301 redirect.
